Meet Nelson R. Bates, OD

General Optometry and Contact Lens Specialist

Our office is pleased to introduce Dr. Nelson Bates. Dr. Bates is our expert in Contact Lenses and Family Eye Care. Dr. Bates excels in patient communication and problem solving and is an expert in detecting pathology. Dr. Bates has been caring for adolescents and adults in the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys as well as Beverly Hills since 1973. Prior to joining Walter M. Fierson, M.D., P.C., he worked with Alan Berg, M.D., John Beauclair, M.D., Jerold Beeve, M.D., John Privett, M.D. and Charles Aronberg, M.D. He joined Dr. Fierson’s practice in 1994.

Dr. Bates graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Southern California College of Optometry where he became a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society in 1969. His Bachelor of Science in Biology was earned at the University of Southern California where he graduated Cum Laude. The California State Board of Optometry has licensed Dr. Bates in Optometry and has Certified him in the use of Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents

As Director of Continuing Education for the California Optometric Association, he scheduled speakers on subjects as varied as Contact Lenses, Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents, Vision Training, and Eye Muscle Disorders. His leadership as President of the Optometric Care Council of Southern California lead to discussions on the “State of Optometry” for the enrichment of all attendees. As President of San Fernando Valley Optometric Society 1982-84, Dr. Bates guided the Society for their education and community work.

Dr. Bates has been honored in 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987 for Outstanding and Dedicated service as Director of Education for the California Optometric Association. Assemblyman Pat Nolan and State Senator Newton Russell honored Dr. Bates for “Outstanding and Dedicated Service as President of the San Fernando Valley Optometric Society.” In 1982,1983, and 1984, he was also awarded for “Outstanding and Dedicated Service as Director of Education for the San Fernando Valley Optometric Society.”

Dr. Bates has extensive experience in the fitting of contact lenses. He uses many types and brands of contact lenses so that each patient is fitted with contacts appropriate to their needs. He works well even with the most difficult contact lens fittings such as the fitting of Keratoconus. His measurement of refractive errors for spectacle lenses leaves patients happy and happy to return. From his many years of working hand in hand with ophthalmologists, Dr. Bates has gained valuable experience and judgment in triaging for pathology.

On the personal side, Dr. Bates has served the community as a Member of the Arcadia and La Canada Kiwanis clubs. In 1984, he received the “La Canada Kiwanian of the Year Award.” In his free time, Dr. Bates is an avid tennis player; he is a member of the Flint Canyon Tennis Club, La Canada Flintridge. He also likes golf, gardening, and playing the Wurlitzer organ.

When asked why he practices optometry, he said that he loves helping people and knowing that his care makes a difference in their life. After recently attending his 40th reunion from optometry school, he realized that he enjoys the company of other optometrists and they are a “nice group of people.”
